It’s been said the leader’s job is to:
“Tune In, Turn On and Take Charge.” Have you noticed what happens when a person tries to “take charge” without bothering to “tune in” or “turn on” to the facts? It’s not pretty.
Our need for speed has chased us into the world of short-cut texting and emails . . . But in the back of you mind you know there use to be a better way. It was called listening, and it’s not to late to relearn how. No less than 35 business studies suggest that listening is the top skill needed for success in business. But at the same time, some studies reveal the average person’s listening comprehension could be as low as 25%. We hear at 125 – 250 words per minute, but we think at 1,000 to 3,000 words per minute. Most people never realize that the conversation they’re having in their head, is a major reason they miss what other people have said. This seminar provides practical, firsthand experience on how to be a better listener. Successful participants will be able to
1) Understand the complexities of listening
2) Recognize and avoid the 10 most common errors in listening;
3) Focus on three distinct levels of listening; (Context, Content and Container);
4) Observe and put into practice some primary listening and interview strategies;
5) Acquire principles and techniques that enable continuous improvement of listening skills.
A 16 page handout ‘workbook / study guide’ is supplied to each participant. Upon successful completion of the seminar, they are awarded their “Advanced License to Practice the Art of Listening.” This business card sized, laminated, dated and signed “license” is actually a handy summarization of the key learning points in the seminar. A second summary card with the 10 most common listening errors will also be given to each participant. The program is presented by means of lecture; PowerPoint slides; humor; illustrations; small group activities and interactive discussions. (Half-day seminar / workshop)
